This book was published to accompany the stunning major exhibition of Burra’s work at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, which has become firmly establshed as a major player in the contemporary art exhibition scene. It is the first full-scale monograph on Edward Burra for nearly three decades and positions him as a major figure in the history of 20th century art. The book reveals a much broader range of work than is known to many and features landscapes, still-life paintings, stage set design and book illustration work as well as his revealing portraits of the seedy underworld of urban life that he is perhaps most well known for. The exhibition and book was featured on BBC TV’s Culture Show. One of Burra’s watercolours (his most favoured medium) sold at Sotheby’s recently for nearly £2 million.
