This compact and intimate book is the second of a great new series of books, Director’s Choice, which I have designed for Scala. Each title consists of an idiosyncratic selection taken from the great Art Galleries and Musuem Collections from around the world. Nicholas Penny, the current director of the National Gallery, has seized the rare opportunity that this book offers its author.
